Daycare can be an incredibly rewarding experience for many dogs. It offers exercise, social interaction, mental stimulation, and a break from home-alone boredom. At PPDD, we see dogs leave our facility each day content and better equipped to navigate the world around them.
While daycare has many benefits, it’s important to understand that it isn’t a natural environment for dogs. It is still often a positive outlet, but it requires a program with thoughtful structure, educated and committed employees, and strict screening when it comes to behavior. That is why PPDD is committed to ensuring staff are trained and confident in interpreting canine body language, and are equipped to manage playgroups in a safe and positive way.
The Importance of Routine and Familiarity
At home, dogs socialize in small, stable groups, usually with family members or familiar companions. In many daycares, they’re expected to share space with a changing group of unfamiliar dogs for 5-10 hours. That’s not something most dogs are wired to handle instinctively. This is why we have the requirement that dogs attend daycare on consistent days each week (with some accommodations of course!). This structure allows dogs to see the same friends and humans regularly, building comfort and predictability into an otherwise busy environment. Familiarity with the group helps reduce anxiety, prevents overstimulation, and creates stronger bonds between dogs and staff. Consistency is key to creating a family-like feel within the daycare space!
Training-Based Play
Why does PPDD incorporate training into playgroups? A daycare environment is full of excitement: noise, movement, new smells, and lots of energy. For confident, high-energy dogs, this can be fun and exciting, but for many, it can also be overwhelming or confusing. Our experienced staff closely monitors every dog’s body language and behavior throughout the day. We guide play, redirect in a positive way, and give breaks when needed. We set the tone for calm and healthy play!
Schedule and Routine: Each playgroup has a set schedule regarding potty breaks, outdoor playtime, door manners and impulse control activities, free-play games such as pools and splash pads, bubbles, foam parties, and more, and calming games in-between playtime for necessary decompression. We do not have a set nap-time, as our dogs naturally begin to curl up for a nap around lunch. We encourage and manage down-time for puppies periodically throughout the day.
Enrichment options: For pups who struggle with decompression time, we may suggest our Enrichment Club subscription. This is for group-play members who will receive two fifteen minute enrichment sessions to engage their brains, and expel extra energy in a safe and stimulating way, prior to returning to their assigned playgroup.
Is formal training required? Training is always encouraged at PPDD, as most dogs enjoy learning and benefit from the mental stimulation and structure it provides. While we don’t require training for all daycare dogs, it may become necessary if a dog is struggling to adjust and we've explored all options within our program. In some cases, a dog may simply need more individualized support than we can offer in a group setting. When that happens, we may require training in order for the dog to continue participating in daycare safely and successfully. Our on-site trainers offer group classes after hours, and private lessons in our Training Center attached to the daycare.
What credentials does the team have? All PPDD employees are certified via Pack Pro on body language, playgroup management, and Pet First Aid Training and CPR. All team members receive consistent on-site coaching and continued education opportunities.
Our Goal: The Right Fit for Every Dog
At PPDD, we don’t expect every dog to love daycare right away, or even at all. Our mission is to create a positive experience for every dog, whether that’s in our daycare groups or through training and tailored enrichment activities. We always take the time to get to know your dog and will communicate openly with you about what we observe.
With structure, consistency, training, and thoughtful observation, we help many dogs thrive in daycare. And for those who need something different, we’re proud to offer options that meet them where they are with weekend enrichment sessions.
